A Crochet Hook Sizing Guide

First, here is some helpful information on crochet hook sizing and converting between the different sizing systems. There are three systems, Metric (AUS/NZ), US, and UK/Canada.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada use numbers for a crochet hook size. The same applies to knitting needles, but they’re still different! For more information and a hook conversion chart, visit my post on crochet hook sizes here.

When you’ve got sizes sorted, read where to buy crochet hooks.

What Sizes Do Susan Bates Crochet Hooks Come In?

Below are charts of the sizing and their equivalent in other systems of each line of crochet hooks and brands Susan Bates sells.

(This business is a subsidiary of the parent company Coats & Clark. Throughout their history, they’ve been owned by multiple corporations. Looking to buy these hooks? They’re in craft stores. Of course, you can get them online too.)

Susan Bates Silvalume Crochet Hooks Chart

Silvalume is the main line from these hook manufacturers and is made of smooth anodized aluminum. The unique anodizing process makes any yarn weight glide over them without being too slippery. It also removes any surface impurities on the shaft part. These are some of the reasons these items have great customer ratings!

Susan Bates Afghan/Tunisian Crochet Hooks Chart

Long aluminum hooks designed for Tunisian or afghan crochet are either double-ended or have a stopper at the end. This size hook is rather like a knitting needle. They’re a variant on the Silvalume line, so they have the same sizing options, though much longer lengths. Makes wrist motion easier when doing Tunisian crocheting.

Unfortunately, they are discontinuing this line, so some sizes and the crochet hook set may be hard to find. The reason people liked this brand was they’re warm to the touch.
